Yes there is a bug in the setup routines that don't correctly configure the mouse type for X windows.
I'm guessing that your using PS/2 mouse in which case edit the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config file.

under section pointer change to the following:-

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "PS/2"
    Device "/dev/mouse"

# Protocol "Xqueue"
# BaudRate 9600
# SampleRate 150
# Emulate3Buttons
# Emulate3Timeout 50
# ChordMiddle

EndSection

This should get you going

If you are on a non cloned i.e ramdisk system then you will obviously loose your changes if you reboot. What is supposed to happen is
that /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86config takes the default file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config.in make the changes to the pointer section and then
store it as XF86Config which is used as the configuration file for the X server.
Michele knows about this so it should be fixed with his usual speedy efficiency
