[oc] FPGAs to become the standard?

HP has posted a press release about their work
on molecular electronics.   An interesting quote
from the article is below:

"All of this work demonstrates that, in the future, programming could replace
today's complex, high-precision method of fabricating computer chips," said
Kuekes, a senior scientist and computer architect at HP Labs. "Once a basic
grid has been assembled, programming could be used to implement a very
complex logic design by electronically setting the appropriate configuration
switches in the molecular-scale structure." 

What he is talking about is fabricating a generic chip, then programming it
to do your specific function.  That is, a gate array.

Imagine the implications for opencores if an FPGA, not an ASIC, became the 
normal way to build a chip.
