Alan,
the mu "install" program superformats the disks to 1.72M before writting the data to them
There are programs out there that'll do this under DOS too.
An unformatted 1.44 floppy should be capable of holding 2.00M.
This superformat trick has been used MANY times in the past as, the extra 300K can mean the difference between success and failure when talking about an O/S
