Interbase is an RDBMS (Relational Database) that supports strong transaction and recoverability, making it a better candidate for Online Transaction Processing, ecommerce, etc than say, MySQL or PostGres .. which although fast and light, lack the more advanced transactionability and concurrency used is heavy duty db. I wouldn't say IB is as good as Oracle or SQL Server, but I think it makes for a relatively strong DB in a multi-user environment. Because of the way Mu is compiled, IB becomes a perfect candidate. I will reinstall my mu, and put IB in /user/Interbase ... I will explore it and see how much "non-essential" stuff is in there, and what could be removed.
Interbase 4.0 was presented as free for use under Linux around the time Oracle, Informix, and others were doing the same, 5.0 is commercial and 6.0 is currently in beta as completely opensource as well as free... I think the company had a lot of developers bail-out during Borland/Inprise's rocky period, and they decided that they had to open-source the product or let it die with the primary coders.
