Just in case anyone was curious about the outcome of this, when I tried
it I got increasingly inconsistent and confusing results, and finally
discovered a faulty memory simm. I hadn't thought of that right off
because I had run the memory diagnostics when I installed this newly
scrounged memory only a month or so ago. It passed then, but it fails
now. So I'm down to 8Mb, but there's no longer any problem getting
/usr into /dev/ram1, from either 1722 or 1440 floppies. To quote
mulinux, "Ohh ! I feel (relatively) happy".
