cat X11.tgz | bzip2 -ds | (cd /; tar -xvf -)
works well and I could upgrade to version 7r5 without
creating floppies for X11 and TCL. This was just for
experimentation. I am not a rebel going against your "not
recommended" policy :-) . It worked out quite well.

I just found a "bug" in the "ethconfig" script in version
7r5. For manual configuration, "ethconfig" tries to read
/etc/eth.conf. Actually, that must be changed to
/etc/net.conf. ( I think version 7r5 saves the ethernet
information in /etc/net.conf and not /etc/eth.conf).
