[oc] Sonics Inc misleadin posting
After reading what Sonics has to say and looking at their
web site it becomes crystal clear to me what Hubert
Wolters/Sonics are trying to do.
I think the statement next to their logo on their
main web pages says it the best: "SMART IP for
Greater SOC Complexity Faster"
Now when I read that, I must ask myself 'why I would
want to increase the Complexity of my SOC [Faster ?]' ???
When I work on an SoC, I usually try to keep it simple,
and reduce the complexity. Use simple interconnects,
don't over-engineer everything, just because it sounds
good on somebodies marketing brochure.
My guess is that Sonics Customers are catching on and
ask them selfs perhaps the same question I did when I
looked at their web site.
Comparing Wishbone to a packet switched interconnect
(or whatever it is they are trying to market there),
is like comparing a Honda Civic to Ferrari. Would you
buy a Ferrari just to drive everyday to your local
supermarket for groceries ? Probably not. Just as
you would not use a packet switched interconnect IP
core to connect an IrDA, I2C and two UARTs in you SoC.
(Well, I guess Sonics wants their customers to increase
complexity in that simple case and use their "SMART
INTERCONNECT").
I too wrote a rebuttal to the Sonics posting on D&R, we
will see if it will get published, if not, I will post
it here ...
Just my personal thoughts ...
Cheers,
rudi
