I think that a FM audio synthesizer would be a good idea.
Just take YM3812 as an example. Actually no more FM audio synthesizers are
produced in a standalone chip.
I was thinking also in a Floppy Disk Controller, but I know that it's not
feasible because it is a partially analog chip.
If YM3812 is too hard for a one-year project, then you can choose to
implement YM2413, which still have a great sound!
