How about using the USB core to drive a set of
USB speakers directly, instead?  One could argue
that a basic soundblaster type card is simply
a throwback to the days when a CPU didn't have
enough power to process an audio signal.

Two arguments FOR a sound card core might be:
1) Backward compatability.
2) Doing multichannel stuff, if it turns out
to be beyond the power of a CPU.

A better core may be a 'USB speaker chip" ??
