I missed another *much more important* suggestion

 3     Do not trust into *meta-more* (am not sure of
   this spelling)  originated vhdl compilers.
   VHDL option of Altera maxplus2, and some in Xilinx,
   those compilers are OEM  from *meta-more* of
   somewhat illegal or DEVELOPED-TOO-EARLY type
   products.

 　If your current compiler does not handle 'package',
'configuration' 'generics' and 'textio'  properly, then
you are missing most variable part of VHDL language
I suppose.

  It is very true that if your compiler could not handle
'configuration' or 'generics' feature of VHDL,  from my
personal opinion, nothing is good in VHDL.  In that case
velirog will become a far better choice.
