[usb] status

Sounds good.

I am still reading over the usb spec from www.usb.org, but I haven't had
much time this week to read very much.  A lot of the spec seems geared
toward making a usb device and not the controller...  I briefly glanced at
the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI), but the legal jargon at the intro
concerned me... it might preclude a license similar to GPL.

I have not yet had opportunity to check out the Universal Host Controller
Interface, so maybe it is more compatible with our intentions.

This weekend should be more productive for me.  I am still hunting down
tools... in the mean time I suggest pulling down an evaluation version of
something.  I used modelsim from www.model.com to flesh out a basic CPU last
semester, and I liked the program.  I used the VHDL version, but I think
they have verilog HDL too.  I'd like to stick to just one language if we
can, and I vote for VHDL as it is the freshest in memory for me. Modelsim
has a beta for linux, but I don't think it is available as a try-out, so
this is windows only option right now.

The state of freeHDL (linux) pretty much eliminates this one.  Unless we
want to help the guy out and jumpstart his development.  You can read about

If you are in linux and don't have windows up and running, but own it, you
can check out www.vmware.com  This is a great program that will let you
install an operating system into a virtual machine under linux.  It isn't
free, but it does have a 30 day trial so you can try it and see if it is for
you.  They have a hobbyist license that puts the price at $99, which is
pretty reasonable for such a great piece of software.  They also have a
version that runs under NT which gives you the same capability, although it
was pretty slow on my NT machine, and the only linux distro that seemed to
work for me was Caldera's.  It did work though.

Anyway, my brain is empty right now.
