Application notes are quite useful for the "theory" side of things.

Typically they start off with a brief survey of the area being
covered, followed by a simple theoretical explanation of the
system being considered.  They then go on into HDL descriptions
and other such things, in which you appear to have less interest.

The other place you may want to look is in VLSI texts.  I think
books like "Weste" and so on include notes on multplier
algorithms.
