What I have done some time ago is to write a
super-reduced inetd for performing such things.
Using it (in /etc/inittab):
T1:5:once:m_inetd 0 23 /usr/sbin/in.telnetd
auth:5:once:m_inetd 99 113 /usr/sbin/in.identd
http:5:once:m_inetd 99 80 /usr/sbin/in.pygmy
The old telnetd, identd, pygmy are obsoleted.
m_inetd is in the asmutils collection and can
be compliled with nasm on mulinux.
