That would result in whoever started X becomeing root after X starts.
Not a good thing.

        chmod +s /usr/X11/bin/startx should do it as root shouldn't it? I
use RedHat most of the time now, and I don't remember having problems
starting x, so you'll have to check the exact path to startx. The
ownership of startx here is:-

[richard@kirkcaldy richard]$ ls -al /usr/X11R6/bin/startx
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1.4k Sep 24 1999
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx
