Thank you for this suggestion. I did indeed try to use "clone" after I had
booted up successfully the boot diskette and added USR.
clone install=ext2 boot=/dev/hda5 root=/dev/hda5 loader=none
It seemed to work without complaint. But what do I get after cloning? I
still must install and run from floppies.
(Using loader=lilo or loader=loadlin did not work. Lilo is not available,
and loadlin is only available on MS DOS.)
