Linux uses tunneling to send ATAPI commands to the CD-R using the parallel port.

Put all printer ports to UNIDIRECIONAL (if this option is available) or BIDIRECTION (SPP, I think). No EPP, no ECP. You must also build a special cable (look for instrucions on the Kernel's DOCs - or ask me and I'll send it to you).
