Yes it might be something like that. I have checked the rc.5 file 
that mu uses when booting up, and it calls "setup -a addons" then 
prints the "setup is inspecting your computer ;)" and then calls 
setup -a custom. I think that the setup -a custom bit isn't important 
on a full umsdos/ext2 install (I'm going to test this teory) and the 
setup -a custom sets up all deamons, mouse etc.
I have also noticed that you can configure given packets bu calling 
"setup usr" "setup x11" etc. so _PERHAPS_ I could get my boot 
up faster by configuring only required bits and pieces at startup.
I haven't yet had the time (or intrest) to tweak the shutdown 
proccess.
I'll let you know if i manage to get something done.
