Just checked, this mc.ext is the bottleneck. If mc.ext is moved to another
directory, so that mc can't find it, the F3 view command is fast.
On the down side, it causes mc to view all files as raw text, so no more
filters.

A layman's diagnosis of the symptoms... mc.ext has a 'type' option, which calls
the unix 'file' command. mu's 'file' is rustic, and mc.ext could be calling
'file' many times, so that it thrashes.
