DATE 19990626 WHAT cLIeNUX is an assemblage of the Linux kernel and commands, documentation, linking libraries and sourcecode from the GNU Project and elsewhere. cLIeNUX currently only supports x86 machines, including MCA or PS/2's. The current "cLIeNUX Core" is intended to serve as the basis for a membership model of open source software compensation, and as a basis for a member-built unbounded Linux/GNU/unix. cLIeNUX has some very distinct features compared to other unices and Linux distributions. Most docs are html. cLIeNUX has a very non-standard filename hierarchy. cLIeNUX has ed and Pico, but not vi. Et cetera. cLIeNUX Core is also intended to provide a model of a small complete Linux. A kernel is not an operating system. cLIeNUX Core is based on the idea that an OS's completeness is a matter of being able to extend and modify itself. cLIeNUX Core includes a C compiler and a Forth. cLIeNUX Core can build a Linux kernel, Lynx, etc. There's a priliminary version of cLIeNUX with The X Window System in interim. The name cLIeNUX is meant to imply "client-use Linux". cLIeNUX Core is configured for client use of the Internet. No servers are on by default, except identd. Hopefully by the time you read this there will be a "descriptive" directory on the primary cLIeNUX site and it's mirrors with much more info. cLIeNUX 1.3 has... That includes the 1996 version of the Mosaic webbrowser, my xart version of XPaint, the ctwm window manager, and the usual standard X stuff. WHO Me. Rick Hohensee. And you. The more the merrier. AND FOR CRYING OUT LOUD LET ME KNOW ABOUT BUGS! yeeEESH. Send bug reports to bugs@clienux.com HOW TRY OUT OR INSTALL The standard install involves 2 floppy image files, bootkernel and rootTree, and several Core? files. There are other ways to go too. If you just want to get an idea of what cLIeNUX is like, get the bootkernel and rootTree files, rawrite or cp them to floppies, and boot with them. You will need rawrite.exe or equivalent on non-unices, and you will need the correct one for your OS. When you get booted on floppies you will find the INSTALL_GUIDE file, which is the instructions for installing from that point onward. To view the INSTALL_GUIDE file, type less INSTALL_GUIDE (Enter) where (Enter) means "push the Enter key on your keyboard". If you are new to Linux it would probably be a good idea to get a book or two on Linux/Unix and look through same. Siever, Ellen and Staff of O'Reilly & Associates Linux in a Nutshell O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. 101 Morris Street, Sebastopol CA 95472 is a widely recognized reference work, though possibly too brief to be a good tutorial. If you know now you want to install the full cLIeNUX Core, make 2 copies of the bootkernel floppy, and download all the Core? files also. The Core? files are the bulk of cLIeNUX Core. They are a set. If you get them get them all. The various rawwrites, which you'll need to make Linux floppies from Wintendo, are in... metalab.unc.edu/public/ftp/pub/Linux/system/install/rawwrite RIGHTS cLIeNUX as a whole may be freely redistributed as a whole. Some parts of cLIeNUX that are original to cLIeNUX may not be redistributed separate from an intact entire cLIeNUX Core. Files so encumbered contain clear notification of this. The release terms of cLIeNUX-specific works have no bearing on most of cLIeNUX, which is composed mostly of works released under the terms of the GNU GPL and similar licenses. In other words, there is no implication intended that there is a blanket cLIeNUX license for all of cLIeNUX. The "intact entire" aspect is parts of the release terms of cLIeNUX-originated parts of cLIeNUX, but pertains only to those parts. There is no all-encompassing "cLIeNUX license", and there is no correlation between permission to use cLIeNUX and paid cLIeNUX membership.
